Short answer: for a typical modern fridge, plan on roughly 1–2 kWh of battery capacity per day of runtime, and a power station with enough continuous output to handle the fridge's startup surge. That usually points to a mid-size or larger Bluetti rather than a small portable one. Check your own fridge's label and the official Bluetti site for current specs before buying.
How to size it
Two numbers matter: how much energy the fridge uses over time, and how much power it pulls at startup.
- Find the running watts. Look at the fridge's rating label or manual. Many list amps or annual kWh. Annual kWh divided by 365 gives a rough daily figure.
- Allow for the startup surge. The compressor can briefly draw several times its running power. The power station's surge rating should cover this.
- Account for losses. Inverter conversion wastes some energy, so usable runtime is less than the battery's rated watt-hours. Budget about 15–20% less as a cautious rule of thumb.
- Decide how long the outage might last. One night and three days are very different problems.
Rough guide
| Goal | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Cover a few hours, keep the door shut | A smaller unit may work if its output covers the fridge's surge |
| Get through one night to one day | Roughly 1–2 kWh of usable capacity |
| Multi-day outage | Larger capacity, expansion batteries, or solar recharging |
These are estimates. Real consumption varies with fridge age, size, room temperature and how often the door opens.

- Keep the door closed as much as possible. A full fridge holds cold longer.
- A chest freezer typically uses less energy than an upright one, though check the label.
- If you add a freezer, lights or a router, add their draw to your total.
- Solar panels can extend runtime, but output depends on weather and sun hours.
- Food safety matters. If food has been above safe temperature for too long, follow food-safety guidance from your local health authority rather than relying on smell or appearance.
- If you want to connect a power station to your home wiring, hire a licensed electrician. Do not improvise connections.
Limits to be honest about
A power station is not a whole-home generator. Running a fridge plus a well pump, heater or air conditioner will drain it much faster, and some of those loads may be beyond a given model.
